How To Keep Your Children Entertained This Coronavirus Period
The closure of schools and nationwide lockdown during this Coronavirus Pandemic has left us confused with what to do with our kids. Some people have even gone as far as thinking up strategies and ways to make it memorable for our kids. I understand that as a work-at-home-parent, this would be a really challenging time and no one is actually prepared for this, but guess what? You have to make this work! I have come up with a list of suggestions on things you could do to keep your children entertained instead of driving you crazy
Being stuck at home for the most part of the day is the best time to make your kids more productive and creative. Reading would help build your kid’s vocabulary and memory. You can start by taking out 15 to 20 minutes of the day (this may not be all at once, you can break it into parts) ensuring your kids read a book. You can do this in different ways: read aloud to them, let them read aloud to you (if they can read), you can also have family time, that is dedicated to reading (Family silent reading time). If your child is interested in reading and wants to keep going after 20 mins, allow the child. After all, there is nothing like too much reading. Here are some sources you can get stories from, Starfall, Splash Learn, Storyline e.t.c.
Play Board Games:
This is another great way to pass time and keep your children busy. Board games are not only fun but also a good way to bond with the family, lower stress by getting everyone relaxed and boost your immune system. There are loads of games to choose from, Ludo, Ayo, Scrabble, Chess and many more. Just make sure everyone is interested in playing the board game you pick.
Sing aloud and have a competition:
As much as you want your kids educated during this stay at the home period you have to also keep them entertained. One way to do this is by having a karaoke competition. You can connect your TV to Youtube or use your laptop to do this! Search for nice kids Karaoke songs on youtube and also sing along. Don’t be shy! There is nothing like embarrassing yourself to entertain your kids.
Watch Educational Shows:
You really do want to keep your kids busy doing the wrong things. That is why you should engage them in educational shows and movies. These educational shows on Netflix and Youtube should come to your rescue.
Connect with your kids:
This is the best time to connect with your kids and give them your attention. Rather than getting them to just do things, spend time with them doing special things. You can have a one-one conversation with your kids or a family movie night. Turn off the lights and cuddle up under the duvet, watch movies together. Have dinner together and have a one-on-one session over dinner. Make this period one of the best times of their lives.
One thing you should keep in mind is that children will remember this period their whole lives. What memories do you want them to have? It’s important to make sure you make your kids feel in control by focusing on their interests and relate closely with them during this period.
